Today we have a fountain pen from the disappeared company Matador, its name is Matador Express 814.As we commented in the test of the model Standard Grey Web,it has a long history. The late nineteenth century in Wuppertal-Elberfel(Germany) Adolf Siebert and Ewald Loewen founded a small manufacture of the writing instruments focused in a low cost production. But with the stiff competition focused their business to high-quality fountain pen to try to match that major of the german manufacturers of that time such as Montblanc or Pelikan other german brands as Soennecken did they same.
It is suspected that the company Matador was ” the competition” to extremes that today would be called “industrial espionage”from here the great similarities with some models of Montblanc even were found Mtador models with original pieces from Montblanc.
This model made in black ebonite with a length of 12,2 mm. and a weight of 16,3 g.The first emphasize is its classic and adequate line from the time when was manufactured, between 1930-1940.
On its cap we can read perfectly thermo-engraved the name of the model”MATADOR EXPRESS”.Its clip is one of the clear hallmarks of the company at this time with an arrow and golden finish to try to pretend a higher quality materials. Also we find a ring with small geometrics engraves in the bottom part of the cap.
The final part of the body has engraved the number “814″identifying the model, and its destination was the public. Together with the cylinder “grated” that allows to start the filling system by integrated plunger in the body.
Once unscrewing the cap we can appreciate the “window”that as the other competitors of the time allowed to see perfectly the charge level of the ink.
The nib made in steel with a number # 3,where has engraved the name of the company and an “M”that identifies. This time the nib is a stub oblique and flexible.
A good fountain pen with thousands of kilometers of writing in his body,Matador was one of those companies that failed to get on the on the winners of its time, but the standard of their success behaved thousands of users and possibly each of them imagined that he was using a Montblanc…..
